if you want the best from your TV services, you need to check out IPTV. Fortunately, we’re bringing it to Manitoba. Keep reading to learn about why this is a technology you’ll want in your home.

What is IPTV?
The technology itself is fairly new, so there’s a good chance you may not be familiar with it yet. If we think about IP (Internet Protocol) as the language that devices communicate with over computer networks, it’s easier to understand how IPTV works. Basically, it allows information to be transferred to and from your television through the Internet protocol.

Why this Matters
At the moment, IP is probably how you have most devices in your home operating. From your phone to your DVR to your computer and, now, your television—all can be operated on the same network. This means they can all communicate with one another, as well, making it easier to sync them and leverage their capabilities on top of each other. IPTV is often provided along with phone and Internet through a Triple Play service that provides all of them through Internet Protocol on a closed network infrastructure.

Advantages Over Satellite
There are other benefits to utilizing IPTV, though, especially when compared to traditional options, like satellite. For example, IPTV allows the user to take a bigger role in their experience. Instead of simply accepting whatever the satellite companies provide you, IPTV allows you to customize your experience. The main advantage is that the quality of the signal with IPTV is not weather dependent. Our services are not affected by rain or snow on everyone’s dish. The cost and selection is better and of course it is easier to Bundle all of your services when they are delivered through the same medium.

You don’t lose any options with IPTV in terms of devices you can use. In fact, when you connect a device to the network, you’ll be able to use it on any TV in the house. So, for example, the show you recorded with a DVR on one TV can be watched on any set in the house.

CommStream looks forward to providing every home in Manitoba with the IPTV service they want. It’s the future of watching television.

We are so pleased to announce we are featured in last week’s issue of the Interlake Enterprise publication. The piece talks about how we are continuing to bring state-of-the-art technology and services to rural Manitoba communities. Read the full article here.

The story in the Enterprise discusses how we are currently expanding our communications

Tom Motkya CommStream CEO

The Interlake Enterprise

products offerings in the Interlake region to include IPTV (digital TV) and telephone (VoIP) services in addition to high speed Internet. Recently, we started to plan out a Fiber to the Home (FttH) conversion of the communities it services, thus providing truly world-class services. Presence of these services already exists with CommStream’s partnership with Gimli’s Interlake Communications Co-op.

We got our start in Gillam, Manitoba, in 2001 when we strictly provided high speed Internet services to the local residents. It expanded into several other northern communities before acquiring its first cable TV operation, just outside of Winnipeg. It has recently acquired several additional cable business concerns throughout the province, giving it a true provincial footprint in Manitoba, and it now has the Interlake squarely in its expansion plans.

“Now we are looking to other communities, and we just recently started offering high speed Internet service in Arborg, with Ashern to follow in March,” Motyka added. Lundar and Eriksdale, MB are also on the list of targeted Interlake communities.

Why is this so exciting? It means CommStream will be one of the first communications companies in all of North America to begin offering IPTV, a digital TV service delivered over a DOCSIS cable modem network.

DOCSIS (an acronym that stands for ‘Data Over Cable Servce Interface Specification’) defines the interface standards for cable modems and supporting equipment involved in high speed data transfer and distribution over cable television system networks.

This new technology has allowed us to deliver Internet at speeds up to 100 Mbps (for comparison sake, MTS’s high speed Internet currently comes in streamed at only 10 Mbps) using DOCSIS to deploy it, and the technology actually already exists to do it at 300 Mbps. Offering Internet speeds of 700 Mbps are just around the corner!

“What this means is that we are getting close to the ‘gigabyte era,’ where services are delivered through fiber optics.” says CommStream’s CEO, Tom Motyka. “This would be like having access to a service comparable to Google Fiber, for example, which operates on a connection that is 100 times faster than today’s average broadband speed.”

All the services they will provide will allow for unlimited data transfer, and customers can even build their own bundle of services over top the basic bundle, or what CommStream calls ‘triple-plays’ (digital TV, telephone and high speed Internet).

“What we are trying to do with all of these services is to bridge the gap between what is already available in larger urban centres such as Winnipeg and Brandon and the services which are currently offered in the smaller rural communities,” Motyka concluded.

If you’ve spent any amount of time considering your options for home phone service, you’ve probably come across VoIP before. Many of you may have used it as one of the modern business solutions to your company’s needs. However, many are using VoIP for residential services and enjoying the result. To learn more about this Manitoba telephone service, continue reading.

What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Many of you will be familiar with Internet Protocol, as it’s normally called “IP.” You are probably aware of having an IP address, for example. In any case, Internet Protocol is essentially the language your computer speaks when it’s transferring information over computer networks. So what we commonly refer to as “the Internet” would be a good example of this.

But that’s not the only thing Internet Protocol can communicate. Indeed, nowadays IP can be used for phone and television service, too. When Internet Protocol is used for the sake of making a call, it’s called VoIP. It works by delivering “voice packets” over the Internet. Each of these packets has an identifier that describes itself as voice data. These identifiers also keep the packets prioritized so there isn’t any distortion.

The Advantages of VoIP
Though many people have only known a landline in their home, it may be time to switch over to VoIP. For one thing, you’ll save money on long distance calls when you make them with Internet Protocol. International calls are much less expensive when compared to traditional options.

There are also a number of features unique to using VoIP. Because you’re using the same means as your Internet, you can receive audio files of your voicemails, for example, by email. Of course, features like voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting are included, as well. The more devices you have hooked up to the same network in your home, the more you can sync them together and combine their services.

While landlines worked for a long time, they’re are not feature rich like other modern offerings. The best example of one of these is Voice over Internet Protocol services. While VoIP is a great example of modern solutions for your business, it can be used in the home, too. You’ll experience the same great results as you do from using it as a business service.

  • IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where digital television services are delivered over the internet by using Internet Protocol.
  • The video channels and programs are delivered to the television sets through a broadband connection, instead of being delivered through the conventional cable or broadcast formats.
  • The video streams are encoded into a series of internet protocol packets and then carried out through the public internet means which can be received by anyone by having a set-top box and a subscription for the service.
  • IPTV is generally provided bundled with the VoIP and the internet access which is referred as “Triple Play” service.
  • This service is a complete package that allows customers to watch TV, browser the internet and making a long distance calls using the VoIP.
  • This service is typically provided by a service provider using a closed network infrastructure.

What is VoIP?

  • Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the delivery of voice packets through the internet, similar to TV (IPTV) content.
  • The VoIP packets have an identifier that describes it as voice data.
  • This allows the voice packets to be “Prioritized” so that there are no distortion in the conversation between the participants.

What is Triple Play?

  • Triple Play is our offering of IPTV, VoIP & Internet services through the same Internet connection.

No one could blame you for feeling overwhelmed, these days, by all the options you face when it comes to picking a high speed Internet provider. For what may seem like a fairly straightforward service, there sure are a lot of different methods for receiving it.

What is Mbps?
Mbps, or millions of bits per second, measures the bandwidth of a telecommunications medium. For our purposes, Mbps is the most commonly used method for comparing the speeds of different Internet services. Obviously, when it comes to picking an Internet service provider, speed is one of the highest priorities. Slow Internet access can greatly hamper the experience; sometimes, slow speed can make Internet access seem almost useless.

CommStream IPTV Internet
